When: Thursday, December 13th, 7:00 PM
Where: Weinstein Auditorium, Wright Hall, Smith College
What: Free Poetry Reading by 30 Poems in November! writers
Reception follows in the Poetry Center
Writers who have “written and raised” during November will read one of their new poems. A couple of Center for New Americans students will also read their poems.
30 Poems in November! raises funds for Center for New Americans’ programs for immigrants, including free classes in English for Speakers of Other Languages, technology instruction, civics, and career coaching and assistance. Many of the 84 writers who participated this year mused about their immigrant ancestors and about U.S. immigration policy while also sharing observations on nature, holidays, and a host of other topics.
Writers range from college students, to writing group members, to experienced published authors, to Center for New Americans teachers and board members.
Sarah Sullivan, this year’s Event Chair, supported writers with encouragement, humor and a wide variety of daily poetry prompts, often citing poems written by other local writers as her inspiration.
To date, 30 Poems in November! has raised about $50,000 in contributions from over 1,080 individuals.
