Imagine a world without borders
if you can. A world where you are
free to seek a better life in a place
of your choosing, a place free from
endless war and religious persecution,
regardless of your skin color, nationality,
creed or economic status.
I believe in the freedom of movement
without borders. No human is illegal.
“This land is your land, this land is my land
From California, to the New York island
From the Redwood Forest, to the gulf stream waters
This land was made for you and me”
This year is a really big test of America's courage and character.
I've spent the better part of 2017 feeling victimized by our current administration: my emotions ranging from outraged to depleted, from numb to despondent...essentially wanting to divorce myself from the America of today.
However, in knowing that others lives are in greater jeopardy than mine, due to our country's current mood, I realize my civic engagement is needed more than ever, that I must be a steward for change, rather than a helpless bystander. I've heard about 30 Poems in November! from area writers who participated in previous years, and have thought about doing the same.. There is no better year than 2017 to do this.
Writing is my lifeline. It is my meditation, and has gotten me through many dark times. I can think of no better way to marry my own personal lifeline with the lifeline of those who've come to America in search of a better life.
Thank you Center for New Americans for making this all possible!
