This is my 6th year participating in this great fundraiser. Growing up, my family often served as a host family for youth who were new to this country, just beginning to learn English and discovering America for themselves. This fundraiser supports important work, helping new immigrants and refugees learn English and find their own way to become part of America. At this point in time, when the News is full of anti-immigrant stories, I hope you will join me in supporting them. Now, more than ever, we need to show that Americans do welcome these newest members of our communities.
As a child, my parents taught me that immigrants are central to who we are as Americans. We hosted many youth who had been displaced from their country of origin, as well as youth who came to this country to learn English and study here. Many of them went on to become American citizens. Some continue to be life-long friends. I know how immigrants and refugees make our communities richer, because I have seen that happen my whole life. I love that this fundraiser allows me to use poetry to support the Center for New Americans. Thank you!
