Dear friends and family,
please help me raise money to support immigrants. I'll be writing a poem a day, and if you sponsor me, you can have the fun of reading the poems. 30 Poems in November! is a literary fundraiser for Center for New Americans, which welcomes and serves immigrants in Western Massachusetts with free English classes and a range of support services. For more information, please visit: http://www.cnam.org. This year, we aim to raise $50,000.
When I was living in central Louisiana, I was asked to tutor a small group of Russian immigrants in English. I quickly learned how hard these people worked, and how difficult it was for them to adapt to their new lives, in many ways. Several of them had been doctors, and they were now working as custodians. One woman told me people called her stupid, simply because she couldn't think of answers in English quickly enough, and what's worse, she started to believe she was stupid. I don't want anyone to feel that way.
Center for New Americans helps make it a little easier for these people who deserve help.
