We all do what we can. I can write poems and I can reach out to friends to support a needed organization. So, it's simple -- I'm committing to writing poems and I'm hoping you'll help me help The Center for New Americans.
I live in a welcoming place, a city that opens its arms to visitors and newcomers. I moved here 20 years ago and the city embraced my family. But that attitude is fragile. Hoping to be welcoming is easy. Generously opening our arms to others takes effort and will. Writing 30 poems in November is my effort to support the idea of generosity and harboring those who've traveled from far. The Center for New Americans does that work of helping newcomers, those who've traveled from afar, at such a high level that it humbles me. I'm grateful to have a way that I can help them keep helping immigrants become new Americans. Besides all that, the Center for New Americans helps puts on the most authentic 4th of July celebration I've ever attended -- watching new Americans become citizens in the middle of Northampton.
