As many of you know, I have been focusing huge amounts of time and energy on immigrant justice issues over the last few months, starting with my trip to the child migrant detention center in Homestead, Florida. I have written a few pieces about this, which I've read at various demonstrations and events, hoping that my words might move more people to action.
Now, I hope you'll help me help the immigrants in my own community by donating to the 30 Poems in November fundraiser for the Center for New Americans. The recent "public charge rule" by the Trump administration is making it harder for immigrants seeking legal permanent residence from accepting any public benefits.
The Center for New Americans helps fill this gap by offering free English classes and a range of support services for the people in our community. I have pledged to join fellow writers in the community and write 30 poems in November in support of this effort. I am asking you to pledge to support me in this effort. You can give $1/poem, 50 cents/poem, $5/poem... whatever. Any amount is helpful. I am happy to share some of the poems with you at the end of November, if you wish.
