The Laws of Miracles
Let us admit the marks of miracles—
simple actions at times of need:
God sent me the check when I was broke.
Lightning struck the tree, not our house.
Miracle lurks wherever we look.
You’ve always said there is no god.
All I ask is that you turn
toward the tug at your sleeve
when an unknown visitor approaches.
I’m not asking for you to give up
your world, your meager belongings, your dignity.
It’s that simple smile, that look in your eyes
which you offer me each time we see each other.
You’ve always said there is no god.
Lift your chin from your chest in wakefulness.
Sing for unsung miracles–
the car that didn’t hit you,
the dog that didn’t die,
the money you have for coffee,
the space beyond the sky.
