This is a photo of my grandmother (second from the right in the back row), her mother, sisters, and brother. They were Russian immigrants who came to this country to escape the pogroms and seek a better life for themselves and the generations to come. One of the reasons, I participate each year in this fundraiser for the Center for New Americans is to honor the memories of my grandparents and great aunts and uncles. My grandmother has always been my inspiration and model of generosity, hospitality, and kindness. I also do it to support immigrant and refugee friends and neighbors in my community who are benefitting from the free English classes and many support services provided by the Center for New Americans. I see it as a way to make a statement in support the wonderful diversity that comes when our country welcomes and supports new Americans from all over the world.
I encourage you to join with me and contribute to support the important and valuable work done by the Center for New Americans and to assert your commitment to welcoming and assisting new immigrants and refugees in their adjustment to our country. In these discouraging times, every act of kindness and compassion matters. I will be writing poems every day and sending weekly emails with poems to any donors who want them.
