I am an artist, an immigrant to the US, child of immigrants to Canada.
I am the daughter of a mother who was exiled from her home by ethnic massacre and the decree of occupiers; the daughter of parents who grew up under foreign rule, without citizenship in their own country, the land of their birth and residence; the child of a father who was gifted, and hunted.
Immigration is complex. Being an immigrant is challenging, disorienting, and often lonely.
My writing explores themes of identity, relationship, heritage, the natural world and indigeneity. My professional work has served immigrants from overseas and the Americas, as well as indigenous and disadvantaged youth and vulnerable adults.
From their meagre income, throughout their lives my parents supported others in need — models of offering a hand up. This campaign is an opportunity for me and you to do the same.
