I don't identify as a poet, and I haven't participated in this fund-rasiser for a few years, but I am happy to return to it because it's a way that writing can change the world. I will do my little part every day by writing a short piece about my summer experience. Maybe what I write will be poem-ish, but I am not making any promises.

For those of you who may not know, I got to work as an assistant wrangler to a herd of seventeen horses in Pinedale, Wyoming. Paul and I lived in a canvas tent, and spent our days outside in near constant motion. Most days, I sat down only for meals. I learned so much from these incredible animals, got to ride in stunning wide-open spaces, and worked with amazing women.

Since returning, many have asked about my summer, and I've struggled to capture everything these four months meant to me.  This fund-raiser arrives at the perfect time. It's the impetus I need to get back into a regular writing routine, and I am thrilled to help raise money for the Center for New Americans, a non-profit, community-based education and resource center for immigrants and refugees who attend free classes in English, technology, job counseling, citizenship, and literacy. Your contribution allows these programs to change lives directly.

Thank you for your support!
