My grandmother Esperanza was an immigrant. She arrived by ship to Ellis Island in the early 1900’s. She came in search of the American Dream. The elusive dream that evades so many. She worked in the factories of NYC. She wanted to be an actress. America was not ready for the talent of my Puerto Rican grandmother. She returned to Puerto Rico to live out the remainder of her days in a small cement house in the campo of Arroyo. If it were not for my grandmother, and the choices she made I would not be who I am today. I dedicate my 30 days of writing poetry to my Abuela Esperanza, and all the immigrants who have come to America in search of their dream.
