Poems for The Center for New Americans

I’m putting poetry to use for something in which I deeply believe, the Center for New Americans and all they do as an antidote to ICE, to the anger and powerless we feel. CNA welcomes our new neighbors from many different countries. What life events must have transpired to cause them to leave friends and family, their familiar language and homes. This organization provides free and low-cost educational, legal, and support services, language classes, & help navigating all we can offer to immigrants, refugees, migrants, and asylum-seekers. I don’t know that I can write 30 poems—in fact I’m sure I can’t—but I can sit down for 30 days and try, with my best imagination and tools at hand…and surely something will come? Center for New Americans has been welcoming and serving immigrants in Western Massachusetts since 1992. We teach free classes in English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), digital literacy, civics, U.S. culture. We offer support services including connections to community resources and assistance finding employment. We also offer some immigration legal services, including assistance applying and preparing for U.S. citizenship, assistance with employment authorization and family petitions, and some humanitarian assistance. We rely on a small, dedicated staff, an engaged board of directors, generous volunteers and supporters, and public and private funding. 30 Poems in November! is one of our most important fundraisers every year.
