Feeling Across Borders

I’m supporting the 30 Poems in November to support our immigrant populations because my life would not be what it is today if it weren’t for those I met who came from outside the borders of the US. My eyes were opened to thoughts, feelings, people, places, smells, sights, and sounds that had been hidden from me. I come from a very small town in Missouri and would not have had this opportunity if it weren’t for fair immigration policies that provided many pathways for me to meet them. This encouraged my career choices in language, a PhD in Spanish and licensed teacher in ESL. Help me give back something to the communities that generously gave me so much.

My entire worldview has been shaped by people from outside the borders of the United States. Partners, friends, colleagues, students, and business partners have all shown me pathways to understanding that were outside my monolingual, homogenous background.  Meeting people from literally so many corners of the world brought me not only a better understanding of the interconnectedness of humanity, but also helped me appreciate my own little corner of it. Humans are born into circumstances that we have no control over. Our destiny should not be determined by fate, but rather by a willingness to take that step forward and find a pathway that works for us. Humans deserve the right to thrive in any space. Writing a poem each day dedicated to an incredible human being who shaped my life will be my way of giving back.
Please support my cause with a donation, any donation, that sends the message that each human matters.
