Who among us has never been a stranger? Who has never needed a helping hand? The Center for New Americans helps recent arrivals to adapt to their new lives and become a part of our local community. You can join me in supporting immigrants, refugees, migrants, and asylum-seekers here in the Pioneer Valley this November, as I write a poem a day. This literary fundraiser supports free English classes and other much-needed supports that help new folks settle in, find work, and become citizens!
This fundraiser is meaningful to me not just because I love our language and thoroughly enjoy the chance to write in community, but also because one side of my family immigrated to America in the not too distant past. Both of my dad's parents came from families who had arrived from Poland before the two of them met and married in New York City, going on to own a small business together and eventually move to a dairy farm in Pennsylvania. Today's new arrivals deserve the same opportunities.
