A picture from my 4th birthday party shows a teenage boy, standing in the background. My family had moved to Florida, just as many people were trying to leave Cuba. I don't remember his name, but I remember his story. He managed to get a place on a small boat and cross from Cuba to Florida on his own.

He stayed with my family until a more permantent situation could be arranged. That began my exposure to the experience of immigrants, especially refugees, who come to this country aspiring to make new lives for themselves. Every November, I am glad to try to raise money to support the work of the Center for New Americans and to celebrate my parents lesson that "family" can always stretch to include one more.
