Civics in Action: CNA Welcomes Political Leaders

This semester, Center for New Americans welcomed our hard-working legislative leaders into classrooms from Springfield to Greenfield giving students an opportunity to speak directly to legislators, and legislators an opportunity to hear directly from constituents who hail from all over the world.

On February 4th, Representative Mindy Domb visited Amherst classes. She emphasized that her role is to listen to and amplify their voices.

On February 10th, Senator Jo Comerford joined a lively Zoom session with morning students from our Amherst, Greenfield, and Northampton classes. She listened carefully to students’ concerns about housing, transportation, healthcare, and finding jobs that take advantage of skills they acquired in their home countries.

On February 24th, Representative Carlos Gonzalez visited Springfield classes. The dialogue touched on affordable housing and job prospects, as well as protections for immigrants.

On March 4th, Representative Natalie Blais met with students in Greenfield and explained how to advocate for legislation that matters to students.

On March 11th, Representative Lindsay Sabadosa visited our Northampton classes. She explained how legislative committees operate.

These visits make civics real.
