As a librarian I understand the strength of a strong community. I’ve been fortunate to know a number of English Language Learners and have seen the extensive support and benefits that Center of New Americans has provided for them.

Each year…humans from all over the world come to the United States, as they have since before the inception of this country, with great hope, with great courage…to settle, create families, businesses, become citizens, learn English, find jobs, and keep the United States the vibrant, growing, welcoming country it is. Think what we can do if we give generously to help CNA make this happen.

I know firsthand the donations are going to a remarkable organization, one that meets immigrants where they are – excited, confused, hopeful, anxious, frightened, brave – and helps them day-by-day to reach their goals: new language skills, an education, a job, the means to support their family, and the opportunity to give back to the country that welcomed them in a time of need.

Once again, I am offering you an opportunity to make changes, to show that you care about others, even those you may never meet. …this is my fifth (!) year with the program, which means I’ve written 120 poems in the past Novembers alone…I’m so glad to be back, and ready to raise as much money as I can!

I participate each year in this fundraiser…to honor the memories of my grandparents and great aunts and uncles. My grandmother has always been my inspiration and model of generosity, hospitality, and kindness. I also do it…as a way to make a statement in support the wonderful diversity that comes when our country welcomes and supports new Americans from all over the world.

I am honored to be part of a group of writers who are raising money to support the work of CNA again this year. Often times I hear myself singing “Up On the Roof” by Carol King “When this old world is getting me down”, and it reminds me of what is possible in the world.

The support the center offers is near and dear to my heart. In a time when immigration is so politicized and refugees rejected by many states, the services delivered are essential. This is the third time I have participated in this event and I am thankful that this writing community helps to keep their services going.
